Worth the Buzz? Let’s take a look at Artificial Intelligence

By now, you have probably heard of Artificial Intelligence quite a few times. But what is it really about. What kind of advantages – and challenges – will it create? Let’s take a closer look at it!

According to the father of Artificial Intelligence, John McCarthy, it is “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs”.
In other words it is making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently like for example human begins think.

The systems and softwares of Artificial Intelligence are based on how the human brain thinks, learns, works and make decisions and solves problems. AI science and technology include disciplines such as Computer Science, Biology, Psychology, Linguistics, Mathematics, and Engineering.

Artificial Intelligence comes with many challenges and it is certainly a scary thought that intelligent machines might take over some of our jobs or even the world. Nonetheless, artificial intelligence also has a great deal of positive potential also for our work environments and can create some new interesting jobs.

Many new prospects of Artificial Intelligence lie within the field of speech recognition, a technology which enables the conversation with intelligent machines. People already get more and more used to personal assistant apps, which interact with a user on different engagement levels and are being created, for example, by huge players such as Apple, Google and Microsoft. The technology invented here can support specialized „conversational apps“. Those kinds of apps require a strong human involvement, because original content needs to be created continuously. For this, evidently, human skills like creativity or knowledge of certain contents are required while computer skills are of secondary importance.

Artificial Intelligence and conversational apps can have an impact on the following fields of business and create corresponding jobs in those fields:

Jobs in Entertainment:
Video and audio games require interaction with the user. This means that the audio commands and the questions he or she asks playing the game will have and impact on the game’s story and its progress. This makes the entertainment industry an important field where artificial intelligence and human skills need to combine.

Jobs in Information and education:
Interactive applications in information and education become more popular every day, not only in museums which started the first attempts. The important feature of these apps ist that the user can ask questions about certain subjects that are being answered by the machine. Intelligent systems need to be able to not only answer the question, but also put it into a context and reply to follow up questions and more detailed instructions.

Jobs in Marketing:
Marketing apps can provide a combination of entertainment and information. They also can be branded to represent a particular firm or product. Part of these brandings may be FAQs, technical support, customer service or descriptions of products. Companies often try to encourage the customer to use the app by presetting a funny and interesting introduction, for example funny responses, questions or challenges.
