Alternative Work Models: Let’s discuss Job Sharing

Not only new technologies bring along new career options and different ways of working. Globalization, technical progress and changes in mobility have led to new chances in the work environment. These changes affect the way we are working together, the way we correspond with our employer and our clients and also the location we are doing our work from.

WHAT IT IS

When two or more people share one job by working on different days or at different times, we call it job sharing. It generally means that multiple people fill one job position. These employees share the responsibilities of one full time job, and receive salary and benefits on pro-rata basis.

BENEFITS OF JOB SHARING

Familiy and social life:
When you share a job with somebody else it is easer to divide your life successfully
between work and family. You will generally have more time to spend with partners,
children and friends or with your social environment

Work-life balance:
While job sharing, you can have a fulfilling job an at the same time follow other things you
are interested in like volunteer work, new leisure activities such as sports and hobbies.

Lower stress levels:
Studies have shown that a lot of people contribute more effectively in shared jobs
because the have a strong counterpart of family and leisure time. Less commuting
can have a positive impact on you as well.

CHALLENGES OF JOB SHARING

Interaction:
One important challenge when you share a job is that you need to successfuly interact
with the other. This interaction may be quite a big challenge, since information needs to
be forwarded at the right time and communications between employees needs to work in
a seamless way so nothing important falls through the cracks.

Compromise:
Since there is another person also making decisions in the same position, it is possible
that you will not always have things your way. Compromise and learning new ways of
working together is required and you personally need to face these challenges.

Personality:
It might occur that you and the other person on your job do not have compatible
personalities, that you do not like your jobsharer or cannot work with him or her
productively. Then the job sharing can fail. There is no guarantee for its success.
